BUILDING

55W is a commercial office space in the heart of Canberra’s Inner South offering a modern, sophisticated environment, walking distance to shopping, cafés and Lake Burley Griffin. This space also features the first commercial installation by Canberra Glassworks.

CANOPY

Collaboration - the word best describes how the installation 'Canopy' came to take its place in the foyer of 55W. The briefing for the artwork required it to be comprised mainly of glass and created utilizing the facilities of the Canberra Glassworks in order to foster connections with the wider Kingston Foreshore precinct, while also making reference to the historical context of the site.

Glass artist Holly Grace’s concept of 'Canopy' was chosen in December 2008 with furniture and sculptor Jonathan Everett also invited to work on the installation alongside Canberra Glassworks, developer NDH Property Services Pty Ltd and architect Robert Morton from Cox Humphries Moss.

The concept for the artwork was based on the Government Printing Office, its workers and the heritage listed trees that line Wentworth Avenue. The artwork creates a glass 'Canopy' that references the sites historical nature. Standing dominantly within the foyer the wooden trunks outline the soft glass branches that sit tall above them.

Individually the sculptures are unique and beautiful but combined they overlap and weave to create an awning not unlike the original trees of the printing office. The Canopy is a reminder of the generations of workers who benefited from the shade provided by the trees that continue to serve us today.
